General Course Info
Course Overview
The "Professional Development" Seminar is a kind of general,
all-purpose
forum for discussion of a wide variety of issue related to research,
teaching,
and other aspects of graduate school and careers (particularly academic
careers) in Psychology. We will also use this time as an
opportunity
to have you discuss and present your own research projects.
I probably won't post an extensive syllabus here, but will
simply keep
you updated in class. One reason for this is that I want to get
your
ideas about what you would like us to cover, and remain flexible in our
schedule so we can discuss issues whenever they seem most timely.
To give you a general sense of the course, though, here's a list of
some
topics likely to be covered either this semester or next (PSY 619):
-
research strategies and advice for first-year projects
-
what it’s like to be in a Ph.D. program (hosted by recent W&M M.A.
graduates)
-
applying to Ph.D. programs
-
research ethics
-
working in academia
-
careers in psychology outside academia
-
grantsmanship
-
attending professional conferences
-
writing and publishing in psychology
-

This page will be useful mainly for Internet links that I will add over
the course of the semester, and for the posting of announcements.
