General Course Info
Course Overview
This "Professional Development" Seminar is a kind of general,
all-purpose
forum for discussion of a wide variety of issue related to research,
teaching,
and other aspects of graduate school and careers (particularly academic
careers) in Psychology. PSY 619 this semester is a continuation
of
last semester's PSY 618.
I probably won't post an extensive syllabus here, but will
simply keep
you updated in class. One reason for this is that I want to
remain
flexible in our schedule so we can discuss issues whenever they seem
most
timely. Below are some of the topics that I expect to cover this
semester:
- what Ph.D. programs are like
- applying to Ph.D. programs (incl. preparing a personal
statement)
- research ethics and proposals
- nonacademic careers in psychology
- grantsmanship
- attending professional conferences
- writing and publishing in psychology
- presenting papers and posters
- preparing a curriculum vita
- miscellaneous topics in philosophy of science and in
research methods
This page will be useful mainly for Internet links that I will add over
the course of the semester, and for the posting of announcements.

will be a small number of assignments, involving oral presentations in
